Yoga on Azores
Why Azores is amazing place for yoga lovers
After three years of calling São Miguel Island home, I've discovered that the Azores offer something truly special for those who practice yoga independently. This isn't about crowded studios or scheduled classes – it's about finding your own sacred space among some of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth.
My favorite solo practice spot
Santa Bárbara Beach
This black sand beach on the north coast has become my special spot. The contrast between the dark volcanic sand and the white foam of the waves creates a captivating backdrop for morning sun salutations. Arriving early, around 8 AM, ensures the beach is empty except for the occasional surfer checking the waves. The sound of the ocean here is powerful – not gentle, but grounding in a way that makes you feel connected to something much larger than yourself.
Sete Cidades Lakes
The twin lakes of Sete Cidades offer one of the most iconic and peaceful settings for yoga practice on São Miguel. I've found several quiet spots along the crater where you can practice with panoramic views of the lakes. The energy here feels different from the ocean spots – more contained and introspective, perfect for those moments when you need to turn inward.
Mosteiros Beach
The volcanic rocks rising from the ocean create natural focal points for concentration, while the consistent Atlantic breeze keeps you grounded and present. Practicing here during sunset when the light turns everything golden and the waves crash against the volcanic rocks with rhythmic intensity creates an unforgettable experience.
These locations aren't just perfect for yoga practice – they're also incredibly photogenic spots that will make your yoga photos truly special. Each offers unique visual elements that create stunning backdrops for capturing your practice. A small tripod is definitely worth packing if you want to capture these experiences properly.
Good to know: If you need a yoga mat or any other equipment, there's a Decathlon store in Ponta Delgada that has everything you could want.
Indoor yoga and outdoor yoga feel completely different, and your body responds differently too. The uneven surfaces, the wind, the temperature changes – they all affect your balance and flexibility. Don't expect to hold poses as long or go as deep as you would in a heated studio. Instead, focus on how the natural elements enhance your awareness and presence.
The Azores have taught me that yoga isn't about having the perfect studio or the right equipment – it's about showing up and being present wherever you are. There's something magical about practicing surrounded by volcanic landscapes and endless ocean views.
