Summer in the Azores
What Azores look like in summer and should you visit São Miguel in primavera
I lived in the Azores for 3 years, so I can tell you exactly what to expect. The Azores in summer are incredible - everything's super green (but honestly, it's green all year round here). The lakes are this crazy blue color, and you've got these black sand beaches that look like another planet. But here's what nobody tells you - it's the hydrangeas that steal the show. The whole island turns into a flower paradise with these massive blue and pink blooms everywhere. It's seriously magical. The weather's around 75°F most days, but here's the catch - the humidity is way higher than you'd expect. It can feel way hotter than the actual temperature, especially at night. You'll probably want AC for sleeping, trust me on this one.
The good stuff
Perfect swimming weather: Water's about 73°F - finally warm enough to swim without turning into a popsicle. This is when the ocean actually feels good. Long days: 14 hours of daylight in July means you can pack way more into your day.
No mosquitos: One of the best things about volcanic islands - barely any bugs to deal with.
Everything's blooming: Those hydrangeas I mentioned? They're everywhere and it's like living in a postcard.
The not-so-good stuff
Prices go crazy: Everything costs way more than winter or spring. Hotels, restaurants, activities - expect to pay double for some stuff.
Car rental nightmare: This is where it gets tricky. Prices shoot up and availability sucks. Use aggregators like DiscoverCars - they're legit and will find you the best deals. Here's something super important: bring a credit card. Like 90% of rental companies won't take debit cards. Only one I know that does is Ilha Verde, and they're actually really reliable.
Humidity hits different: Don't just pack for 75°F weather. That humidity makes it feel way hotter, especially when you're trying to sleep. The Crowd Situation Yeah, it's busier, but don't freak out. It's not Madeira-level crazy crowded. You'll have to share the popular spots but it's not like you can't move or enjoy yourself. Just start early and you'll beat most of the crowds.
Month by month
June: Sweet spot. Good weather, fewer people, slightly better prices.
July: Peak everything. Best weather, most people, highest prices.
August: Still great weather, maybe a bit less crazy toward the end.
Practical things you want to know
For sports gear: There's a big Decathlon store where you can buy or rent kayaks, bikes, and tons of other stuff. Way cheaper than renting from tourist places.
Weather reality: Pack for humidity, not just temperature. Light, breathable clothes and definitely something for AC at night.
Booking: Do it early. Like, months early. Especially for cars and decent hotels.
So should you visit the Azores in summer?
Go in summer if:
— You want guaranteed good swimming weather
— You're okay paying more for the experience
— You want to see those insane hydrangeas in full bloom
— You don't mind some humidity and crowds
Maybe pick another time if:
— You're on a tight budget
— You hate feeling sticky from humidity
— You want that "locals only" vibe
Summer in the Azores is beautiful but it's not cheap and it's not empty. The weather's great for swimming and the flowers are unreal, but you'll pay for it and share it with other people. If you can handle the humidity and higher prices, it's totally worth it. Just be smart about booking early and bring that credit card for the car rental.
